One of the Fifteen Whispered Prayers of Imam al-Sajjad (a)
In the Name of God, the All-Beneficent, the All-Merciful.
My God, would You, after my faith in You, chastise me? Or after my love for You, drive me away? Or despite my hope for Your mercy and Your forgiveness, deprive me? Or despite my seeking refuge in Your pardon, hand me over? Far be it from Your Noble Face that You should disappoint me! Would that I knew: was it for wretchedness that my mother bore me, or for hardship that she raised me? Would that she had not borne me and had not raised me! And would that I knew whether You have made me one of the people of felicity, and singled me out for Your nearness and Your neighbourhood, so that my eye might be delighted by that and my soul be at peace with it. My God, will You blacken faces that have fallen down prostrate before Your grandeur, or strike dumb tongues that have spoken in praise of Your glory and Your majesty, or set a seal on hearts that have enfolded love for You, or deafen ears that have delighted in hearing Your remembrance in their desire for You,
or shackle hands that hopes have raised to You in hope of Your tenderness, or punish bodies that have worked in obedience to You until they wasted away in striving for You, or chastise feet that have hastened in worship of You? My God, do not lock the doors of Your mercy against those who profess Your oneness, and do not veil those who yearn for You from gazing upon the beauty of beholding You. My God, a soul You have honoured with the profession of Your oneness, how could You abase it with the humiliation of Your abandonment? And an inmost self that is bound fast in love for You, how could You burn it with the heat of Your fires? My God, shelter me from Your painful anger and Your great wrath. O All-Compassionate, O Bestower of favours, O All-Merciful, O All-Beneficent, O Compeller, O All-Subduing, O All-Forgiving, O Concealer of faults, deliver me by Your mercy from the chastisement of the Fire and the disgrace of shame, when the good are set apart from the wicked, and states are transformed, and terrors grow dreadful, and those who did good draw near and those who did evil are far off, and every soul is paid in full for what it has earned, and they are not wronged.
O God, bless Muhammad and his family
