Munajat of the Thankful

One of the Fifteen Whispered Prayers of Imam al-Sajjad (a)

In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

My God, the succession of Your bounty has distracted me from offering You due thanks, the flood of Your grace has left me unable to count Your praises, the stream of Your recurring favours has kept me from recalling Your praiseworthy acts, and the constant flow of Your gifts has worn me out from proclaiming Your kindnesses. This is the station of one who has acknowledged the fullness of blessings, has met them with shortcoming, and has borne witness against himself to neglect and squandering. And You are the Kind, the Merciful, the Good, the Generous, who does not disappoint those who seek Him, nor drive away from His courtyard those who hope in Him. In Your courtyard the hopeful set down their saddles, and in Your open court the hopes of those who seek Your gifts come to rest. So do not meet our hopes with disappointment and despair, and do not clothe us in the garment of hopelessness and despondency.

My God, my thanks have grown small before the greatness of Your bounties, and my praise and proclaiming have dwindled beside Your honouring of me. Your blessings have robed me in garments of the lights of faith, the subtleties of Your goodness have spread over me canopies of might, Your favours have hung on me necklaces that cannot be undone, and have collared me with collars that cannot be broken. For Your bounties are abundant, my tongue too weak to count them, and Your blessings are many, my understanding too short to grasp them,

let alone fathom them all. So how can I attain thanksgiving, when my thanking You itself calls for thanks? For every time I say, 'To You belongs praise,' it becomes my duty, for that, to say, 'To You belongs praise.' My God, just as You have nourished us with Your gentleness and reared us by Your handiwork, so complete for us the ample blessings, ward off from us the hateful afflictions of punishment, and give us, of the portions of the two abodes, the highest and the most glorious, both now and in time to come. And to You belongs praise for Your good testing and for the fullness of Your blessings, a praise that accords with Your good pleasure and draws forth the immensity of Your goodness and generosity. O Great, O Generous, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O God, bless Muhammad and his family
