Munajat of the Hopeful

One of the Fifteen Whispered Prayers of Imam al-Sajjad (a)

In the Name of God, the All-Compassionate, the All-Merciful.

O He who, when a servant asks of Him, gives to him; when he hopes for what is with Him, brings him to his wish; when he turns towards Him, draws him near and brings him close; when he openly defies Him in disobedience, veils his sin and covers it; and when he relies on Him, suffices him and is enough for him. My God, who is it that has alighted with You seeking Your hospitality, and You did not host him? And who is it that has made his mount kneel at Your door, hoping for Your largesse, and You did not grant it to him? Is it fitting that I should turn back from Your door, sent away in disappointment, when I know of no master but You who is known for beneficence? How can I hope in other than You when all good is in Your hand? And how can I set my hopes on other than You when the creation and the command are Yours? Shall I cut off my hope in You when You have granted me of Your bounty what I did not ask for? Or will You make me need someone like myself, while I hold fast to Your rope? O He through whose mercy those who seek Him find happiness, and through whose vengeance those who seek forgiveness do not find wretchedness!

How could I forget You when You have never ceased to remember me? How could I be heedless of You when You are watching over me? My God, to the hem of Your generosity I have fastened my hand, and towards attaining Your gifts I have stretched out my hope. So make me sincere through the purest affirmation of Your oneness, and place me among the chosen of Your servants. O He to whom every fugitive turns for refuge, and in whom every seeker places his hope! O Best of those in whom hope is placed, O Most Generous of those who are called upon! O He by whom the one who asks is not turned away, and the one who hopes is not disappointed! O He whose door is open to the one who calls on Him, and whose veil is lifted for the one who hopes in Him! I ask You by Your generosity to favour me with such of Your gifts as will gladden my eye, such hope in You as will set my soul at rest, and such certainty by which You make the afflictions of this world easy for me and clear the coverings of blindness from my insight, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

O God, bless Muhammad and his family
