Taught by Amir al-Mu'minin (a) to Kumayl ibn Ziyad; read on Thursday night and the 15th night of Sha'ban
O God, I ask You by Your mercy which has embraced all things, and by Your strength with which You have subdued all things, before which all things are humbled and before which all things are brought low, and by Your omnipotence with which You have overcome all things, and by Your might which nothing can withstand, and by Your greatness which has filled all things, and by Your sovereignty which has risen above all things, and by Your Face which endures after the passing away of all things, and by Your names which have filled the foundations of all things, and by Your knowledge which encompasses all things, and by the light of Your Face by which all things are illumined.
O Light, O Most Holy, O First of the first and O Last of the last. O God, forgive me the sins that tear away protections. O God, forgive me the sins that bring down punishments. O God, forgive me the sins that alter blessings. O God, forgive me the sins that hold back supplication. O God, forgive me the sins that bring down affliction.
O God, forgive me every sin I have committed and every wrong I have done. O God, I draw near to You through Your remembrance, and I seek Your intercession with Yourself, and I ask You by Your generosity to bring me near to Your closeness, to grant me gratitude towards You, and to inspire me with Your remembrance. O God, I ask You with the asking of one who is submissive, lowly and humbled: that You pardon me and have mercy on me, and make me content and satisfied with Your apportionment, and humble in all circumstances.
O God, and I ask You with the asking of one whose destitution has grown severe, who lays his need before You in hardships, and whose longing for what is with You has grown great. O God, Your sovereignty is great, Your station is exalted, Your scheme is hidden, Your command is manifest, Your subduing prevails, Your power runs its course, and there is no escaping Your rule.
O God, I find no forgiver of my sins, no concealer of my ugly deeds, and no one to change any of my ugly deeds into good ones but You. There is no god but You. Glory be to You and by Your praise. I have wronged myself and I have been bold in my ignorance, and I have relied on Your remembrance of me from of old and Your favour upon me. O God, my Master, how many ugly things You have concealed, how many grievous afflictions You have lifted, how many stumbles You have guarded me from, how many hateful things You have warded off, and how much beautiful praise, of which I am not worthy, You have spread abroad.
O God, great is my affliction, my wretched state has gone beyond bounds, my deeds have failed me, my chains have held me down, my far-reaching hope has kept me back from what would benefit me, and the world has deceived me with its delusions, and my own soul with its offences and my procrastination. O my Lord, so I ask You by Your might that my evil deeds and acts not veil my supplication from You, and do not disgrace me by what You know of my hidden secrets, and do not hasten punishment upon me for what I have done in my private moments of my evil action and my wrongdoing, my constant negligence and my ignorance, and my many desires and my heedlessness. And be,
O God, by Your might, kind to me in all circumstances, and tender towards me in all affairs. My God and my Lord, whom have I but You to ask to remove my distress and to look into my affair?
My God and my Master, You set a decree in motion over me in which I followed the desire of my own soul, and I did not guard in it against the enticement of my enemy, so he deceived me with what I desired, and the decree aided him in that. So in what befell me of this I transgressed some of Your limits and I disobeyed some of Your commands. So Yours is the praise over me in all of that.
I have no plea in what Your decree has brought upon me, in what Your judgement and Your trial have bound me to. I have come to You, my God, after my shortcomings and my excess against myself, apologising, regretful, broken, seeking release, seeking forgiveness, turning back in repentance, admitting, submitting, confessing. I find no escape from what I have done, and no refuge to which I can turn in my affair, other than Your accepting my excuse and Your admitting me into the breadth of Your mercy. O God, accept my excuse, have mercy on the severity of my distress, and release me from the tightness of my bonds.
O Lord, have mercy on the weakness of my body, the thinness of my skin and the frailty of my bones. O You who began my creation, the remembrance of me, my upbringing, kindness to me and my nourishment, grant me pardon for the sake of the generosity You began with and Your past goodness to me. O my God, my Lord and my Lord, can it be that You would torment me with Your fire after I have affirmed Your oneness, after what my heart has enfolded of knowledge of You, after what my tongue has constantly repeated of Your remembrance, after what my conscience has held firm of love for You, and after the sincerity of my confession and my supplication, humbled before Your lordship?
Far be it from You! You are too generous to abandon one You have raised, or to drive away one You have drawn near, or to cast out one You have sheltered, or to hand over to affliction one You have sufficed and shown mercy. If only I knew, my Lord, my God and my Master, whether You would set the fire upon faces that have fallen down prostrate before Your greatness, upon tongues that have spoken truthfully of Your oneness and praised You in thanks, upon hearts that have confessed Your divinity with certainty,
upon consciences that have held such knowledge of You that they became humble, and upon limbs that hastened obediently to the places of Your worship and signalled, submitting, for Your forgiveness. Such is not what is thought of You, nor is this what we have been told about You, by Your grace, O Generous One, O Lord. You know my weakness before even a little of the affliction of this world and its punishments, and the hardships that befall its people in it, though that is an affliction and a hardship whose stay is little, whose lasting is slight, whose duration is short.
So how could I bear the affliction of the hereafter and the grievous occurrence of hardships there, when it is an affliction whose duration is long, whose stay endures, and which is never lightened for its people, because it comes only from Your anger, Your vengeance and Your wrath, and this is what the heavens and the earth cannot withstand? O my Lord, how then shall it be for me, when I am Your servant, weak, lowly, insignificant, wretched and humbled? O my God, my Lord, my Lord and my Master, for which of the matters shall I complain to You,
and for which of them shall I cry out and weep: for the pain of the torment and its severity, or for the length of the affliction and its duration? For if You consign me to the punishments together with Your enemies, and gather me with the people of Your affliction, and part me from those You love and Your friends, then suppose, my God, my Lord, my Master and my Lord, that I endure Your torment, how could I endure being parted from You? And suppose that I endure the heat of Your fire, how could I endure being kept from looking upon Your honour? Or how could I dwell in the fire while my hope is Your pardon?
So by Your might, my Lord and my Master, I swear in truth: if You leave me able to speak, I will cry out to You among its people with the cry of those who hope, I will scream to You with the scream of those who scream for help, I will weep for You with the weeping of those who have lost, and I will call to You: where are You, O Guardian of the Faithful, O Goal of the hopes of those who know You, O Rescuer of those who cry for rescue, O Beloved of the hearts of the truthful, O God of the worlds?
Can it be that You, glory be to You, O my God, and by Your praise, would hear in it the voice of a Muslim servant imprisoned there for his defiance, who has tasted the taste of its torment for his disobedience, and been confined between its layers for his crime and his offence, while he cries out to You with the cry of one who hopes for Your mercy, and calls on You with the tongue of the people of Your oneness, and pleads with You by Your Lordship? O my Master, how could he remain in the torment while he hopes in Your past forbearance? Or how could the Fire pain him while he hopes for Your favour and Your mercy?
Or how could its flame burn him while You hear his voice and see his place? Or how could its roaring enfold him while You know his weakness? Or how could he be tossed between its layers while You know his sincerity? Or how could its keepers rebuke him while he calls out to You, 'O Lord!'? Or how could he hope for Your favour in freeing him from it, and You leave him in it? Far be it! That is not what is thought of You, nor what is known of Your favour, nor is it like Your goodness and Your kindness with which You have treated those who affirm Your oneness.
So I declare with certainty: were it not for what You have decreed of punishing those who deny You, and what You have ordained of making those who defy You abide forever, You would have made the whole Fire cool and safe, and no one would have had a dwelling or a station in it. But You, holy are Your names, have sworn to fill it with the unbelievers, from the jinn and mankind together, and to make those who defy You abide in it forever. And You, exalted be Your praise, said, of Your own initiative, and graciously bestowed Your favours in generosity:
Is one who was a believer like one who was a wicked sinner? They are not equal. My God and my Lord, I ask You by the power You have determined, and by the decree You have made binding and judged, and by which You have prevailed over those on whom You carried it out, that You forgive me, in this night and in this hour, every crime I have committed, every sin I have sinned, every ugly deed I have kept secret, every act of ignorance I have done, whether I concealed it or declared it, hid it or made it known, and every evil deed You commanded the noble scribes to record,
those whom You have charged with recording whatever comes from me, and whom You have made witnesses against me along with my own limbs, while You Yourself were the Watcher over me beyond them, and the Witness to what was hidden from them; by Your mercy You hid it and by Your favour You covered it. And that You grant me an abundant share of every good You have sent down, or kindness You have bestowed, or goodness You have spread, or provision You have extended, or sin You forgive, or fault You cover. O Lord, O Lord, O Lord!
O my God, my Lord, my Master and the Owner of my bondage, O One in whose hand is my forelock, O Knower of my distress and my wretchedness, O One aware of my poverty and my need, O Lord, O Lord, O Lord, I ask You by Your truth and Your holiness and the greatest of Your attributes and Your names, that You make my hours of the night and the day filled with Your remembrance and joined to Your service,
and my deeds accepted by You, until my deeds and my litanies all become a single litany, and my state in Your service everlasting. O my Lord, O One on whom I rely, O One to whom I have complained of my conditions, O Lord, O Lord, O Lord, strengthen my limbs for Your service, make firm my ribs in resolve, grant me earnestness in fearing You and constancy in keeping joined to Your service, so that I may move freely towards You in the arenas of those who go ahead,
and hasten to You among those who come forward, and long for Your nearness among those who long, and draw near to You with the nearness of the sincere, and fear You with the fear of those who have certainty, and gather in Your neighbourhood with the believers. O God, whoever intends me harm, intend it for him, and whoever schemes against me, scheme against him; and make me among those of Your servants with the finest share before You, the nearest in station to You, and the most favoured in closeness to You, for that is not attained except by Your favour. Be generous to me with Your generosity, and incline towards me with Your glory.
And protect me by Your mercy, make my tongue ever busy with Your remembrance and my heart enslaved by Your love, favour me with Your gracious answer, raise me up from my stumbling and forgive my slip, for You have decreed upon Your servants that they worship You, commanded them to call upon You, and guaranteed them the answer. So towards You, O Lord, I have set my face, and towards You, O Lord, I have stretched out my hand. So by Your might, answer my supplication, let me reach my desire, do not cut off my hope in Your favour, and protect me from the evil of my enemies among the jinn and mankind.
O Swift to be pleased, forgive one who owns nothing but supplication, for You do whatever You will. O He whose name is a remedy, whose remembrance is a cure and whose obedience is riches, have mercy on one whose capital is hope and whose weapon is weeping. O Bestower of abundant blessings, O Repeller of calamities, O Light of those who are forlorn and afraid in the darkness, O Knower who is taught by none, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and do with me what is worthy of You. And God bless His Messenger and the blessed Imams of his family, and grant them abundant peace.
O God, bless Muhammad and his family
